Roaster's Comment

The first fresh crop arrival from Kenya this season comes from Gatomboya Factory in Nyeri — a clean and fruit-forward coffee full of vibrant character.

The “AB” designation refers to the screen size, or bean size, ranking just below AA. In general, Kenyan AB lots are often associated with more delicate, floral profiles and citrus-driven acidity compared to AA coffees. However, this Gatomboya AB challenges that assumption beautifully, offering rich berry-like sweetness, refreshing grapefruit-like acidity, and notes reminiscent of yellow peach. It’s a deeply satisfying cup that proves AB coffees can be just as expressive and impactful.

Wonderful both hot and iced, this coffee truly shines as a bright and juicy summer cup. We hope you’ll enjoy it throughout the season.

Factory's Note

“GATOMBOYA” means “swamp” in Kikuyu, one of Kenya’s local languages. GATOMBOYAFACTORY was established in 1987 under the Mathira Farmers Cooperative Society, and later became part of the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society.

As of 2022, GATOMBOYAFACTORY collects and processes coffee cherries from 698 smallholder farmers. The region receives approximately 1,500 mm of annual rainfall, with temperatures ranging from around 14°C to 25°C. Surrounded by Mount Kenya and blessed with fertile volcanic soil, the area offers ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.

The factory also supports its member farmers by providing assistance for school fees, farm management costs, and emergency expenses. Another important goal of GATOMBOYAFACTORY is to share knowledge with producers, including guidance on crop management and agricultural practices essential for quality coffee cultivation.
